HE COUNTY WAS FORMED IN
1912, ORIGINALLY PART OF
CHOTEAU COUNTY. It's bordered
by the Canadian Provinces of Alberta and
Saskatchewan and is near the Fort Belknap
Indian Reservation e 2010 census report
tells us: e county is 74% white, with
almost 22% American Indian or Native Alaskan, 19 % are below
poverty level. More than any other part of Montana, this is the
county the railroad built. James J. Hill, head of the Great North-
ern Railway campaigned to bring European immigrants to the
Hi-Line. Today Amtrak passengers ride the railroad past vast
wheatlands.
Havre is the largest city and county seat. Havre Beneath the
Streets is a popular underground attraction to see how people set
up businesses below street level during a great fire of 1904. An-
other attraction, Beaver Creek Park, is said to be the largest county
park in the U.S. From the park follow roads to the Chief Joseph
Battleground, or to the Rocky Boy Reservation.
Northern Montana College has a well-tended campus south of
town. e remains of Fort Assininbone are a half-mile south of
highways 2 and 87. e Clack Museum leads tours.

BELGRADE
Chalet Market at 6410 Jackrabbit Lane has been
named Retailer of the Year by the MT Chamber of
Commerce. e store specializes in smoked meats,
cured and packaged onsite, along with sandwiches
and ice cream. Some folks' grandparents came to
the Swiss chalet building. You can too.
HELENA
ON BROADWAY, restaurant at 106 E. Broad-
way St., Helena. In a dimly lit room of
exposed brick, enjoy the classy and intimate
atmosphere while dining on creative Italian
dishes. Check the schedule for jazz nights.
