Did you know that our FACEBOOK PAGE
has become the
#1 PAGE FOR "LIKES"
and followers, exceeding all other Montana

YEP, A BIG FB "THUMBSUP FOR US!"
Yay!
INTERIOR OF GOLD MINING CAMP THAT COULD BE
FOUND AROUND BANNACK, VIRGINIA CITY, AND
HELENA IN 1880S. To give a sense of a room finished
in plaster, muslin was stretched over the log ceiling
and walls. Early structures were made of rubble-
stone over which plaster was laid. Windows were
packed with sawdust. Then false fronts were added
to make the places look bigger and give a sense of
permanence. Arches, half-columns, and medallions
added dignity. Photo courtesy of Gallain History

TIVOLI BAR (right). Here drinking,
music, and gambling have long
been popular. Yet for many
years gambling was prohibited
(but not unpracticed). In 1865,
when Montana became a Terri-
tory all forms of gambling were
criminalized. Not until 1972 were
forms of gambling legalized,
such as poker and keno. By the
1990s, gambling made a huge
comeback in the form of video
gaming machines. In 2013 the
state collected $14 million worth
of taxes in one quarter.
COOKING A HEARTY BREAKFAST, 1925. This man has a
hungry look on his face as he makes a pancake while
smoking a cigarette. Luckily a photographer was present.
