Ekalaka
Medicine Rocks State Park near Ekalaka. It's easier to travel in
summer so take a road trip to this park to see a fantastic landscape
with 2,000 historic inscriptions and petroglyphs — once a sacred site
of the Sioux. Hike and camp where Native American huntng parties
gathered in the shadows of the sandstone chambers.
Three sections of the Sioux Division of the Custer National Forest lie
within striking range of Ekalaka. South of town are the Chalk Buttes,
stark white cliffs that sit atop rocky buttes. Ekalaka Hills is another
section and has camping options. The third section is Long Pines,
a day-long trip but well worth it. The Custer National Forest Office
can be reached at 406.775.6342
