And students. At the height of the Civil War, Congress enact-
ed the Morrill Act (1862) which set aside western land so that
states could sell the land and build colleges focusing primarily
on agriculture, science, military science and engineering, al-
though other curricula were allowed. The schools were known
as Land Grant Colleges, and the new state of Montana took
advantage of the plan. What we now know as Montana State
University began life on February 16th, 1893, as the Agricultur-
al College of the State of Montana. Today, after several name
changes, Montana State University is the largest institution
of higher education in the state, with over 1,300 full and part-
time faculty and nearly 17,000 students. It offers degrees in 250
fields, much more than just agriculture and engineering.

er Bowl or Big Sky. Maybe take a snow cat ride into Yellowstone
