Butte's Berkeley Pit is one of the toughest and most
toxic places in the country. It would take a tough dog
to live there, and I should know -- I am that dog.
How I got into the pit isn't worth
mentioning, and I don't remember much
about it, anyway. The important thing
is that I came here in 1986, to protect
Butte, the pit, and everyone around it.
Workers in the pit jokingly called me The Auditor
because of my unscheduled and unexpected visits.
And while I appreciate their wit, the men don't grasp
the deeper accuracy of the name they gave me.
