horses, a TRAVOIS was an
incredibly useful way for Native
Americans to transport their
stuff over the plains of Montana.

maller and lighter than a Conestoga
wagon, PRAIRIE SCHOONERS got
their name from the way their white can-
vas covering looked like ship sails across
the plains. The wagons were 10 feet
long, 4 feet wide. Settlers usually had
the wagon packed so tightly that only
children or older people made the bumpy
ride west—everyone else walked.
