Roaming Eastern Montana: Shadows on the plains by David Baumstark Smith Lake by KC Glastetter E astern Montana means fantastic badlands, historic monuments, and dinosaur fossils. Here ante- lope, pheasant, grouse, prairie chickens, prairie elk, and wild turkeys roam. Here oil and gas development has radically altered some towns. But mostly eastern Montana is celebrated for its colorful people and towns: Broadus, Colstrip, Ekalaka, Fort Peck, Glasgow, Glendive, Hardin, Jordan, Malta, Miles City, Plentywood, Poplar, Scobey, Wibaux, and Wolf Point. With this essay we honor the residents and vast landscape of eastern Montana. 16 DISTINCTLY MONTANA • FALL 2012
