Decorating his hair are the "bowtie" shell and beadwork ornaments, plus hair pipe with bead drops. He is holding a vicious-looking gun-stock war club. Wrapped around his body is a beautifully painted buffalo robe with the design commonly worn by women; however, there are several paintings by Karl Bodmer and George Catlin of men also wearing this linear design. A magnificent grizzly bear claw necklace, a sign of importance and stature, is around his neck. HOLLOW HORN BEAR 40" X 30" Remarkable portrait of a prominent Brulé Lakota chief, participant in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. His father was the well known Brulé Chief, Iron Shell. After the Indian Wars he traveled east and became a kind of celebrity to the American public. His image is on the 14 cent postage stamp and at one time, on the $5 bill. He was appointed head of the Rosebud Reservation police force. In 1913 Hollow Horn Bear was invited to take part in the inauguration of President Teddy Roosevelt. He died of pneumonia in 1914.
