GET TO KNOW A COUNTY ROUNDUP MUSSELSHELL COUNTY MUSSELSHELL COUNTY lies in South Central Mon- tana; it is north of Billings in Yellowstone County, east of Ryegate in Golden Valley, west of Forsyth in Rosebud County. The name comes from the mussel shells found in the river, which Lewis & Clark is said to have named. The census says there are around 5,000 people, 1800 households, 96% white with occasional black, Native American, Asian people. The biggest employer now is the coal mine, Signal Peak Energy, and some oil is being explored but the largest industry is agriculture. Roundup, the county seat, was established as a convenient place along the Musselshell River for cattle- men in the open range days to gather their cattle for the annual roundup. If you visit the town be sure to look into Troy and Coila Evans' exquisite woodwork, sculptures, and paintings. See www.blockhorsedesigns.com. Coila also runs an art gallery on Main Street. In 2011 Roundup experienced a serious flood and dozens of homes had to be evacuated. Flooding and fires have changed the county physically.
