South of Bigfork and north of the Swan Valley is the extremely beautiful Jewel Basin. Studded with 25
alpine lakes, it offers 35 miles of hiking trails with expansive views of the Flathead Valley to the west
and Hungry Horse Reservoir and the Great Bear Wilderness to the east. You will see many wildflowers,
even beargrass, and maybe mountain goats.

EKALAKA
CARTER
COUNTY
CARTER COUNTY
Located in the lowest, southeastern corner of
the state. First settled by the Sioux tribe, named
for omas Henry Carter, first congressman from
Montana. Has some of best grazing land in state
but is so dry that livestock require a lot of land to
thrive. Only .2% is water. Medicine Rocks State
Park is located 14 miles north of Ekalaka. For the
Indians the rocks were a place of sacred medicine.
Weathering has made the soft sandstone rocks
mysterious and picturesque, beautiful and haunting.
Once frequent community dances and card games
are a thing of the past, due to the Internet and TV.
Still present in
Ekalaka are the
Wagon Wheel
Café, Old Stand
Bar, and weekly
Ekalaka Eagle.
