Pompeys Pillar
North of Billings on the Yellowstone River is the sandstone cliff where
William Clark etched his name and date in 1806, the only record of the
famous expedition. He named this spot after his Native American guide's
son, "Little Pomp." The Yellowstone River flows nearby amidst thick
cottonwood trees waving in the breeze. Long before L & C, Crow Indians
engraved a sacred mountain lion and other animals (now hard to see).
Spiffy Visitors' Center awaits.

Sample award-winning wine made with
honey at Hidden Legend Winery: pure
honey (light & dark), spiced, maple,
elderberry, chokecherry, huckleberry,
peach, "The King's Mead." Mead, the
father of all alcoholic drinks, is made
by fermenting honey with yeast but it
eludes definition. Centuries old, it pos-
sesses medicinal qualities. Ken and Lisa
Schultz will sell you mead-making kits
too. www.hiddenlegendwinery.com.
Utica
In this smallish, almost ghost-town, see a log cabin that repli-
cates one in a Charlie Russell painting. Restored by Don Waite,
he is also building a replica cowboy town in the very area where
Russell ranched. Talk to Waite about how his granddaddy cow-
boyed with Russell in the 1870s-80s and hear other stories. In
1888, Walter Waite and Ed Morris built the Silver Dollar Saloon.
Attached to it was the Judith Hotel where Walter's wife worked.
Both are now torn down but you can read about Utica as an icon
of the West in
Silver Dollar Tales by Walter Waite.
