The truly spectacular Absaroka range boosts Emigrant Peak to 10,960 feet and Mt. Cowen to 11,206 feet, both facing the roadway and the Gallatin range to the west...just try to keep your eyes on the road! The two-lane tarmac enters the valley from the north and travels its length in almost a straight shot into Gardiner, Montana, before looping the final few miles into Yellowstone. Great viewing along the way is complemented by one's anticipation of a fine lunch and hot spring soak at Chico Hot Springs or, for the more adventurous, a dip right into the "Boiling River" which joins the Gardiner River in (you guessed it) Gardiner Canyon. It's well-worth a stop and photo op here, where one can soak in nature's snowy splendor at the 45th parallel, smack-dab halfway between the equator and the north pole. Arriving at Mammoth be sure and take the boardwalk tour of these marvelous hot springs, which are always chalk-white, dissolving limestone in a constant reformation of the spring area. Livingston to Mammoth ... A summer treat and respite WOW FACTOR: TOWERING MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES, YELLOWSTONE RIVER, CHICO HOT SPRINGS, 45TH PARALLEL AND THE BOILING RIVER DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERA AND SWIMSUIT Contact us for area maps, AAA TourBook Guides and hotel reservations.
