The world’s oldest man, WALTER BREUNING, was a Montanan, who had lived in Great Falls since 1918. He died at the age of 114 in April, 2011.
Montana’s state butterfly is the mourn- ing cloak, or Nymphalis antiopa. First to appear in spring, we recognize it by its small brushlike front legs and brown wings with bright blue spots along the inner edge of a yellow or beige border.
The Beartooth Highway, finished in 1936, was the vision of Red Lodge citizens, headed by a medical doc- tor named Dr. J.C.F. Siegfriedt. They wanted to to build a new road to Yellowstone that would bring them an influx of tourist dollars. All would agree it’s been a major success.
Five variety of falcon make their home in Montana: prairie falcon, peregrine falcon, kestrel, merlin, and gyrfalcon.
