they let the activity calm
down for a while and then
kelly pulls out the big guns.

he's brought a portable loudspeaker that hooks up to his Ipod. searching through
a special playlist, he finds a series of bigfoot howls made in washington state.
the same recordings that first put him on this quest.
he pushes "play" and...
the roar rips the night, thunders
off the bridgers, and is probably
heard back in bellingham.
and then,
between
the whacks
and the
wails,
something
magical
happens.
with every one of their senses straining to catch
any sign of bigfoot, any grunt or broken twig,
any smelly fur or shadow in the trees, the kids
become profoundly in touch with where they are.
the big hill. The
bigger mountains.
The biggest sky.
whoa.
trying so hard to
find one thing,
they suddenly
find everything.
squatching is
an addiction.
One more call,
one more
wood knock.
Maybe that will
be the one that
finally gets a
response.
the cool brush
of wind, the
smell of pine,
the cough of
a tractor in a
field miles away,
they are aware
of it all.
But it's late and little feet
get cold, so the team packs
up and bigft1 clamors back
down the twisted road.
And the stars! the milky way
arcing above them in full
glow, with the perseid meteor
shower raining darts of light
right over their heads.
the excited talk of sasquatch on
the way up changes to animated
discussion of shooting stars and
blazing satellites.
they hadn't found
bigfoot, but there
will be many other
nights for that.
TOnight they had
found montana,
and that's much,
much bigger.
