JULY 25, 1806
On a distinctive sandstone rock
outside of Billings, Clark etches
his name and the date, becoming
the only physical evidence of the
exhibition that still exists.
He names it Pompy's Tower,
after Sacagawea's son.
JULY 26, 1806
Lewis's group meets a few Blackfeet
warriors, and catches them trying to
steal guns and horses. In the fight,
Lewis kills a young brave.
SEPTEMBER 23, 1806
Lewis and Clark reunite where the
Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers merge.
APRIL 27, 1805
The Expedition enters
Montana after spending
the winter at
Fort Mandan in
North Dakota.
In the end, the Corps of Dis-
covery explored around 8,000
miles of the newly-accquired
western United States. They
set out from St. Louis on May
14, 1804, finally made it to
the Pacific Ocean near pres-
ent-day Astoria, Oregon, on
November 7, 1805, then re-
turned to St. Louis on Sep-
tember 23, 1806.
