Prior to being placed on allotments, the Salish farmed as successfully as nonwhites in the Bitterroot valley. Then the U.S. Government ordered them onto the Flathead reservation. The Salish, led by Charlot, chose nonmilitary resistance and almost starved as the government delayed paying them for their land. Forced out, Charlot bore himself like a king in exile, an observer wrote.
