Once the area was all Crow territory before white settlers moved in. Captain Clark's brigade camped near Hunter's Hot Springs in 1806. It now consists of 1,855 square miles, is bigger than Rhode Island, and includes 449 miles of public lands offering the best in fishing, camping, and recreation. e county seat, Big Timber, dwells in a valley formed by the confluence of the Boul- der and Yellowstone Rivers, which are surrounded by cottonwood trees. It was named for a sawmill. In the mid-1890s, Big Timber shipped more wool than any town in the U.S. Two Irishmen, Charles McDonnell and Edward Veasey, drove 3,000 head from CA to MT in 1880. Ranching provides the basic economy. Some people work for the Stillwater Mining Company in East Boulder. e Grand Hotel is the anchor of the town. It's known far and wide as the finest bed & breakfast on the Yellowstone. e Sunday brunch is sumptuous. Some outstanding features of the county are the Greycliff Prairie Dog Town, the Natu- ral Bridge State Monument, and the Road Kill Bar and Café ("from your grille to ours") in McLeod. Famous people have found it amenable too, including the illustrious photographer Barbara Van Cleve, novelist and screenwriter omas McGuane, and Christopher Paolini, author of the Eragon & Dragon series. Since it is mostly outdoors, it reopens in April with an underground mine tour that illustrates a miner's life. Advance registration required. Miningmuseum.org. ENNIS AREA Looking for a gorgeous hike? Take the moderate 1.6 mile BEEHIVE CREEK TRAIL and enjoy a peaceful landscape with plenty of wildflowers. It crosses a creek and features educational signs.
