Johnny Grant, pioneer trader
and cattleman, lived from
1831-1917. His first wife was
a Shoshone. Although Johnny
was prone to gambling—and
losing—he had a shrewd eye
for livestock and built up a siz-
able herd of cattle and horses.
He settled in the Deer Lodge
valley and built the house
that would become the basis
for the popular Grant-Kohrs
ranch. Photo: National Park

Ousel Falls, Big Sky, 1910. One of
Montana's beautiful waterfalls,
it is now easily accessible on a
well-groomed, switch-backing trail
that starts at a parking lot on the
road to Lone Mountain. Walking
up the Gallatin River among spruce
trees you soon hear, then see the
cascade. A picnic table awaits you.
Look for Water Ouzels in the water;
they can dive deep and run along
the bottom with half-open wings.

Luther Storey holds a bike with his daughter Lois posed on it. This photo was taken in Cameron in 1909. Cameron,
named after one of its early settlers, is near Yellowstone National Park and the Sphinx Mountain. The bicycle was
used to make deliveries. It has a bar for foot pedals and a pouch attached to the crossbar.
