S REGULAR READERS KNOW, WE OFTEN MAKE
MENTION OF MONTANA'S SEASONS IN THIS
SPACE, as it is our focus for editorial content and a
touchstone for the sentiment we are trying to convey in a state
which wears its weather well. Spring though? Well it's just a little
different in Montana. Spring here is like the court jester of climate.
ough our publishing date is just six days from the start of
spring, most livable areas of Montana are still buried in great,
shriveling piles of snow, the rivers chocked with ice, the mountains
likely guffawing over this absurd pretense to seasonal change. It
also snows through spring…a lot; and the weather doesn't com-
pletely exhale its frosty air until, sadly, June (most of the time).
But, spring, though a tease, does have a job. It fills us with a
pleasant change of attitude and hopefulness, knowing that it is
working hard to strip us of our parkas, give us back our trails, up
the ante on daylight, and allow for dreams of summer fests and
festivals. It will even sneak in some really nice days, and maybe a
few daffodils from time-to-time, as a reward for our patience.
So, with our oddly fickle spring it will help if you hold the long
view, expect the unpredictable, harbor a great sense of promise and,
at least, a small smidgen of joy.
When in doubt if it's spring step into the sun, then into the
shade. You'll know.
