LACIER COUNTY IS LOCATED
IN NW MONTANA AND KNOWN
BY THE BLACKFEET AS THE
"BACKBONE OF THE WORLD." e
county includes the Blackfeet Indian Res-
ervation, Glacier National Park, and Clark
National Forest. It is bordered by 75 miles
of boundary with Alberta, Canada. Five small communities and
two incorporated towns are located within the county. East Glacier
(pop 300+) and Babb (pop. 174) on the Blackfeet Reservation are
unincorporated communities.
Cut Bank in Glacier County is known as the coldest town in
Montana, which means it's the coldest in the United States.
Enter Glacier National Park at the junction of Route 89 and
Many Glacier Rd for your best chance at catching sight of a griz-
zly. e Amtrak stops at East Glacier. It crosses the Two Medicine
River and joins Cut Bank Creek to form the Marias. On the road
to Babb stop for good eating at the Two Sisters Café. For instance,
sink your teeth into a crusty Vietnamese beef sandwich. Or a
perfect chicken fried steak.
e Badger-Two Medicine Roadless Area is the hub of a
wildlife ecosystem and Traditional Culture District. It is both holy
and wild. e quiet Two Medicine area offers several exciting hikes
with magnificent vistas and lakes. Look for Cut Bank Pass Trail
and Dawson-Pitamakan Loop. Pitamakan Pass is named after
a female warrior leader of the 19th century—the only Blackfoot
female to lead raiding parties.
